IA|BE Solvency II Advanced - Pillar II: CAT NAT
Natural catastrophe (CAT NAT) risk is one of the most significant and complex risk drivers for many non-life and reinsurance undertakings and one where the gap between standard formula assumptions and actual exposure can be substantial. This session provides a rigorous treatment of CAT NAT risk under Solvency II Pillar II, covering the Pillar I standard formula approach for natural catastrophe risks and its limitations, the use of internal and vendor catastrophe models for risk assessment, and how CAT NAT risk is integrated into the wider risk management framework and ORSA. Participants will examine the key peril categories relevant to the Belgian and European market, including flood, windstorm and earthquake, and how exposure management and accumulation control are embedded in the risk management framework. The session also addresses scenario analysis and stress testing for extreme events, the interaction between CAT NAT risk and reinsurance, and the governance and documentation requirements expected by supervisors. Attention is given to supervisory expectations in this area, the role of EIOPA's natural catastrophe dashboard, and the implications of climate change for CAT NAT risk assessment over the longer term. Practical examples will illustrate where the standard formula falls short and how a more refined assessment can support better capital and risk management decisions.
This session is suited for actuaries and insurance professionals involved in risk management, underwriting, reinsurance or the ORSA at Belgian non-life insurers or reinsurers who want to deepen their understanding of CAT NAT risk assessment and management under Solvency II.
Practical info: The session will be delivered in English, and a Teams link will be shared two days prior to the session.
