Inflation has returned as a material risk driver for insurers — affecting claims costs, technical provisions, asset valuations and business planning in ways that were largely absent from risk frameworks for more than a decade. This session provides a rigorous treatment of inflation risk under Solvency II Pillar II, covering the channels through which inflation affects an insurer's balance sheet and risk profile, and how inflation risk is identified, measured and managed within the risk management framework and ORSA. Participants will examine the distinction between economic inflation, social inflation and claims inflation, and how each affects different lines of business and liability durations. The session covers scenario analysis and stress testing for inflation risk, the interaction with market risk and reserving uncertainty, and the governance expectations around inflation risk management. Attention is given to the practical challenges of calibrating inflation assumptions in a volatile environment, the link between inflation risk and asset-liability management, and how inflation risk is reflected in the ORSA narrative and quantitative analysis. The session also addresses supervisory expectations and the implications of the current macroeconomic environment for inflation risk governance.
