IA|BE AWA invites you for a lunch causerie with Jean-Paul Van Bendegem
You are kindly invited to the third edition of the lunch causerie, organized by IA|BE Task Force AWA (Actuaries Without Age). Everybody is most welcome!
The keynote speaker of this lunch causerie is Emeritus Professor Jean-Paul Van Bendegem*
He will address the following topic:
Chance and randomness: how should we deal with them?
Probabilities and chances are part of everyday life: the probability that it will rain, the chance that the train is delayed, the chance of winning the lottery…but what exactly are probabilities? How good are we as humans at estimating them? Do we overestimate them? Do we underestimate them? The lecture will mainly focus on the tension between actual probabilities and how poorly we are able to estimate them. For the latter, the audience will also be asked to participate. Finally, the difficult question of what randomness is and whether it truly exists will also be explored.
