Can machines think? Mathematics is the key … (13/05/2025)

AWA (Actuaries Without Age) has the pleasure of inviting you to an inspiring presentation: Can machines think? Mathematics is the key … by Prof. Dr. Ann Dooms.

Ann Dooms

In 2015, Prof. Dooms became a professor at the Department of Mathematics where she now leads the large Mathematics & Data Science (MADS) research group and the Digital Mathematics (DIMA) team within it.
She presents the mathematics behind contemporary technology in an accessible and clear way through her columns and blogs for the science magazine Eos and the newspaper De Tijd.

Abstract

Alan Turing asked himself this question back in 1936 in his now iconic article ‘Computing Machinery and Intelligence’.

He thus laid the foundations for Artificial Intelligence, and mathematics turned out to be the key!

But how exactly?

In this lecture, Ann unravels the mathematical principles behind the technology that makes machines ‘think’, from the very beginning over today's algorithms to tomorrow's computers.

Discover how the ultimate thinking sport pushes the boundaries of machine intelligence.

Prepare for a fascinating journey from theory to practice!
