Web session IA|BE : The Impact of Covid-19 on Future Higher-Age Mortality

Schedule of The Impact of Covid-19 on Future Higher-Age Mortality

On Monday 17 May:
17:00 - 18:30 The Impact of Covid-19 on Future Higher-Age Mortality
  1. From 17:00 to 18:30

The Impact of Covid-19 on Future Higher-Age Mortality

    Topics to be discussed:

    • How is Covid-19 mortality experience compared with all-cause mortality
    • The future mortality prospects for those who survive the pandemic will looked at. A simple model will be presented that allows to explore this question. In the absence of secondary effects of the pandemic, survivors are likely to be healthier than the pre-pandemic population, with a corresponding small increase in life expectancies

    Speaker:

Andrew Cairns is Professor of Financial Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh and at the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

He is well known both in the UK and internationally for his research in financial risk management for pension plans and life insurers.

In recent years his research has focused on the modelling of longevity risk: how this can be modelled, measured and priced, and how it can be transferred to the financial markets. Amongst his work in this field, he has developed a number of new and innovative stochastic mortality models.

He is an active member of the UK and international actuarial profession.

His research has received several international prizes including the Halmstad Prize in 2008, the Society of Actuaries Annual Prize in 2009 and the Robert I. Mehr Award in 2016.

In 2016 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters.

Andrew Cairns is co-inventor of the CBD stochastic mortality models and author of the LifeMetrics open source R code for fitting stochastic mortality models that can be used for modelling, measurement and management of longevity risk.
